Right after lunch at this year’s SDCGA annual meeting on Saturday, January 17th at the Sioux Falls Convention Center, a trio of top-notch policy experts including RMA Administrator Michael Alston, Agri-Pulse’s Sara Wyant and University of Illinois professor Jonathan Coppess will present on the new farm bill, conservation compliance and federal crop insurance program.

Michael Alston is the associate administrator of the Risk Management Agency. His presentation will concentrate on crop insurance along with the conservation provisions attached to that program in the new farm. He previously served as director of an RMA regional office that handled crop insurance operations in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.

Sara Wyant is the president of Agri-Pulse Communications, a diversified communications firm with offices in Washington, D.C. and Camdenton, MO. Sara will provide an overview of the new farm bill and address where we go from here. Her newsletter and website, Agri-Pulse, include updates on farm policy, commodity and conservation programs, trade, food safety and more.

Jonathan Coppess, a clinical assistant professor of law and policy, teaches agricultural law and leads the university’s research in policy issues that affect agriculture and risk management. Jonathan will break down the new farm bill programs including the commodity title, conservation compliance and crop insurance coverage options. He is a former administrator of the Farm Service Agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Growers have many decisions to make with the new farm bill during the next few months and these presenters should provide a wealth of information for those yet to complete their base acre reallocation, program election and enrollment.
