Ethanol

About

Using ethanol blended fuels benefits us all. It’s good for the environment, the economy and of course the South Dakota corn producer.

More than 14,000 South Dakotans have invested in some form of ethanol production. The state is set to consume 250 million bushels of corn for ethanol and by 2008 is expected to be producing 1 billion gallons of ethanol.

The Corn Utilization Council is dedicated to educating consumers and producers of the wide variety of ethanol uses and of the substantial benefits in order to provide South Dakota corn producers continued success and more value-added opportunities in the future.

South Dakota has been a pioneer in the ethanol industry, and we continue to lead in this area. Since 1988, 12 ethanol plants have been built and are currently operating. The ethanol plants have been a great success, showing a 33% return on investment. So far, they have produced approximately $400 million in capital investment for South Dakota.

South Dakota's ethanol leadership is clear:
  • #1 in the US in farmer-owned plants
  • #1 in the US in percentage of corn used
  • #4 in the US in total ethanol production
