The 29th annual meeting of the South Dakota Corn Growers Association will feature a longtime, popular radio personality and an in-depth presentation on programs contained in the 2014 farm bill. The daylong event will be held Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015 at the Sioux Falls Convention Center.

Orion Samuelson, co-host of “This Week in Agri-Business” on RFD-TV will moderate the meeting. In addition to serving as moderator, he will give a presentation, “You Can’t Dream Big Enough,” in which he will discuss lessons learned, the growing ag industry and opportunities that lie ahead.

Farm bill programs will be a key part of the educational presentations. Jonathan Coppess of the University of Illinois and Sara Wyant of Agri-Pulse Communications, RMA Associate Administrator Michael Alston will provide overviews of the farm bill and explain the commodity, conservation and crop insurance programs. Coppess, clinical assistant professor of law and policy, teaches agricultural law and leads the university’s research in policy issues that affect agriculture and risk management. He is former administrator of the Farm Service Agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Wyant is president of Agri-Pulse Communications. Her newsletter and website, Agri-Pulse, include updates on farm policy, commodity and conservation programs, trade, food safety and more.

Matt Roberts, an associate professor of agricultural, environmental and development economics at Ohio State University, will give a presentation on risk management, pricing and marketing.

Information technology will be the topic of a panel discussion headed by Andy Pringnitz and Sean Arians. Pringnitz is district sales manager with Granular, a SaaS software and analytics company that serves the agriculture industry. Arians is marketing manager at Precision Planting in Illinois, where he leads the development and execution of marketing strategies. The evening banquet will include dinner, a program and live music that will feature a long list of songs familiar to everyone in attendance.

The top Eagles tribute band, Hotel California, will play songs made famous by the Eagles, who produced 20 hit songs in the 1970s, ‘80s and ‘90s, including five No. 1 hits.

During the evening banquet, the Corn Growers will honor retiring board members and present four annual awards: Legislative Appreciation; Excellence in Public Outreach; Excellence in Agriculture; and MVP in Agriculture. Culver’s CEO Craig Culver and South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard will also speak.

All of the educational presentations are free. Lunch costs $20/person and the proceeds will be donated to Feeding South Dakota, the states largest hunger relief organization.
