Gary Duffy, who farms near Oldham, is a long-time veteran of corn boards. A past president of both the South Dakota Corn Growers Association (SDCGA) and South Dakota Corn Utilization Council, he returned to the SDCGA board in February 2018.
“I missed it. I wouldn’t have gotten off if I wouldn’t have been term limited,” Duffy said. “I spent 17 years with South Dakota Corn and got to see the birth of an industry.”
During his tenure, Duffy was liaison to the U.S. Grains Council and worked to boost international markets for corn and dried distillers grains. He was founding chairman of the South Dakota Value Added Development Center, and served on the Crop Improvement Association state board. He was named an Eminent Farmer by South Dakota State University in 2015.
Duffy said the two main issues facing farmers are profitability and regulation, and noted economic challenges are similar to when he started serving the organization. As a current member of the East Dakota Water Development District board of directors, he said nitrogen issues are a big thing, but farmers can make management changes to address concerns.
He is a past chairman of the Kingsbury County Democratic Party, a
past member of the Oldham school board and past president of the Oldham
City Council. He has been a sports official for 40 years. He and his
wife Judy farm near Oldham where he is a partner in a family farm
corporation that produces corn and soybeans.
