Taylor grew up on a family farm near Frederick, South Dakota. While in high school he met his future wife Cassandra at a homecoming dance in 1992. After graduating high school, he attended South Dakota State University majoring in Ag Engineering. He soon realized that he missed farming and life in a small community, so he switched majors and graduated in 1996 with a degree in General Agriculture.
