Corn Comments: April 2026 Fertilizer Update

Welcome to Corn Comments, I’m DaNita Murray, Executive Director at South Dakota Corn.  We are brought to you by the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council, a volunteer group of farmers who promote corn marketing in this state, the US and around the globe.

In late March, Farm Journal administered a National Corn Growers Association survey regarding fertilizer which illustrated that 36% of farmers still needed to purchase some of their phosphate fertilizer and similarly 40% of farmers still needed to buy nitrogen.

Farmers are clearly the best source of information regarding their purchasing decisions as well as on any impact to their operations both now and this upcoming fall.

However, while the last 60 days have been impactful regarding fertilizer price, its important to remember that underlying structural issues in this market predate February 28.

In addition, any USDA program must serve in the end to decrease fertilizer prices for farmers in a sustained and meaningful way.

Stay tuned for more information on this important topic.
