Welcome to Corn Comments! I’m Brandon Ritter, a corn farmer and cattle producer in Mound City. We are brought to you by the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council, a volunteer group of farmers who promote corn marketing in this state, the U.S. and around the globe.
Summer is grilling season in South Dakota, and there’s an important connection between the burgers, pork chops, brats, and steaks on our grills and the corn grown right here at home.
A new study from the U.S. Meat Export Federation shows that in 2025, beef and pork exports accounted for more than 32 million bushels of South Dakota corn usage and added more than 139 million dollars in value to South Dakota corn.
Nationally, beef and pork exports accounted for more than 508 million bushels of U.S. corn usage this year, contributing an estimated 108 dollars per corn acre.
Every time U.S. beef and pork products are sold around the world, they help create demand for corn and distillers grains. That means strong export markets support both livestock producers and corn farmers here in South Dakota.
So, as you fire up the grill this summer, remember that South Dakota agriculture is working together to feed families here at home and customers around the globe.
