Corn Comments: Analyzing North Dakota State University Center for Agricultural Policy and Trade Studies

Welcome to Corn Comments, I’m DaNita Murray, Executive Director at South Dakota Corn.  We are brought to you by the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council, a volunteer group of farmers who promote corn marketing in this state, the US and around the globe.

As you know, input prices are high, while at the same time soy and corn prices are low with recent basis in the upper Midwest uniquely problematic, as analyzed by the North Dakota State University (NDSU) Center for Agricultural Policy and Trade Studies in its September 2025 Agricultural Trade Monitor publication, “Soybean Basis Hits Record Low Amid Zero New-Crop Sales to China”.

Use of county-level pricing would more accurately capture the economic hardship currently being experienced by some farmers in our and other regions of the country when calculating net loss.
