Corn Comments: Countervailing Duty Imposed Upon Moroccan Phosphate Imports
Welcome to Corn Comments, I’m DaNita Murray, Executive Director at South Dakota Corn. We are brought to you by the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council, a volunteer group of farmers who promote corn marketing in this state, the US and around the globe.
A new review of the countervailing duty imposed upon Moroccan phosphate imports recently began to work its way through what is generally around a 9 month process from start to finish at the US Department of Commerce. Countervailing duties are intended to protect domestic industry from injury.
However, these duties are affecting fertilizer availability and affordability here in the US. It is currently estimated around 20-25% of farmers did not pre-purchase their phosphate fertilizer before this spring. Recently, Nutrien announced it did not support the renewal of the Moroccan CVD. Mosaic and Nutrien account for around 80% of the phosphate capacity here in the U.S. Phosphate plant closures have led to industry consolidation.
Stay tuned for the impacts from a one-in-four acres fertilizer shortage.
