Recent world events have led to sharp increases in fertilizer pricing and in some locations in the U.S., the inability to obtain a quote. Approximately 15% of U.S. imports are from the Middle East. To be clear, the problems in this subsector predate the evolving situation in the Strait of Hormuz, however these developments underscore the ability of this highly concentrated industry to make a bad situation worse at least in-part because of their market power. South Dakota corn farmers must have a truly competitive fertilizer sector.
