Corn Comments: Fire Prevention on the Farm

Welcome to Corn Comments! I’m Travis Renkly, Secretary/Treasurer of the South Dakota Corn Growers Association. I farm near Arlington, serve as a volunteer firefighter and build custom fire trucks.

We are brought to you today by the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council, a volunteer group of farmers who promote corn marketing in this state, the U.S. and around the globe.

October 4th through 10th is Fire Prevention Week, and it comes at an important time for South Dakota farmers — harvest.

Dry crops, dust and chaff combined with hot equipment can create the perfect conditions for a fire. Take a few extra minutes each day to clean debris from combines and tractors, inspect fuel and electrical systems, and make sure working fire extinguishers are easy to reach.

And have a plan before an emergency happens. Know how first responders can access your farm, where water is available and where potential hazards are located.

As both a farmer and a firefighter, I know preparation matters. This harvest, take the time to prevent a fire before the first spark.
