Corn Comments: High Fructose Corn Syrup

Welcome to Corn Comments, I’m DaNita Murray, Executive Director at South Dakota Corn.  We are brought to you by the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council, a volunteer group of farmers who promote corn marketing in this state, the US and around the globe.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service estimates that per-capita consumption of High Fructose Corn Syrup has decreased by more than 40% since 2000. At the same time, obesity and diabetes rates recorded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have both increased. The obesity rate has jumped from 30.5% in 2000 to 40.3% in 2023, and the diabetes rate has increased from 9.7% in 2000 to 15.8% in 2023.

This information helps to illustrate the difficulty of trying to achieve meaningful health outcomes through the demonization of any one type of food source.  Stay tuned for more information regarding corn utilization in South Dakota.
