Welcome to Corn Comments! I’m Jim Ketelhut, President of the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council, a volunteer group of farmers, who promote corn in this state, the United States and around the globe.
You’ve probably heard the phrase: “Knee high by the Fourth of July.” That saying dates back to 1884. While modern technology now pushes corn well past knee-high by late June, the phrase still resonates with growers across the Corn Belt.
As we celebrate Independence Day, it’s worth remembering how fortunate we are. In the United States, we enjoy the most abundant, nutritious, and affordable food supply on Earth—and that’s thanks to the dedication of farmers right here in South Dakota.
So this Fourth of July, wave your flag, honor those who’ve defended our freedoms, and take time to appreciate family, food, and freedom.
From all of us at the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council—have a safe and happy Independence Day!
