Welcome to Corn Comments! I’m Eric Jones, Assistant Professor and Weed Management Extension Specialist at South Dakota State University. Corn Comments is brought to you by the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council, a volunteer group of farmers, who promote corn in this state, the United States and around the globe.
A production practice that must be done by farmers every year to grow a profitable crop is weed management. Weed interference in corn can cause at least 50% yield loss. Herbicides such as atrazine and glyphosate effectively manage the weed species that infest corn fields.
These two herbicides are rigorously reviewed regularly by the Environmental Protection Agency to ensure safety for consumers and the environment when used in accordance with labeled directions. The safety of these herbicides are evaluated based on many different scientific studies conducted.
