Having choices is a good thing. Especially when it comes to the fuel you put in your car as renewable options like ethanol that save consumers money, reduce nasty tailpipe emissions, lessen our dependence on foreign oil and stimulate the local economy.

Now with fuel retailers having success with blend E15, the gas station chain Kum and Go announced this week they will be inserting the option into 65 stores across 7 states including South Dakota.

E15 has been approved by the EPA for use in cars and light trucks 2001 or newer, which represents more than 75% of vehicles on the road today. In fact, E15 is the most tested fuel in history with the equivalent of 12 round trips to the moon and back without a single failure.

Consumers can find the blend at some blender pumps across the state, but this would be the first chain to offer the choice to consumers at non-blender pump locations.

Currently at most stations in South Dakota, drivers can save 20 cents per gallon by simply choosing cleaner burning E10 (10% ethanol and 90% gasoline) over regular or 100% gasoline which includes MTBE, a nasty carcinogenic octane enhancer.

By choosing higher blends like E15, drivers will save additional dollars, further reduce carbon emissions, naturally boost their octane and support a local biofuel industry that employs thousands of hard-working South Dakotans.

South Dakota has 7 Kum and Go locations, all in Sioux Falls, but it has not been confirmed as to which stations will offer E15 at this time. South Dakota Corn will provide an update to readers as that information becomes available.
