SDSU Extension to host Ag Drainage Workshop

Posted on February 06, 2015

Farmers, landowners and others wanting to learn more about water management principles and practices are invited to attend the South Dakota Drainage Design Workshop on February 17-18 at the SDSU Extension Regional Center in Sioux Falls.

The workshop will focus on the planning and design of agricultural tile drainage systems to meet profitability and environmental objectives. The course content is taught in a hands-on manner and with a great deal of discussion time.

Topics will include drainage design fundamentals, legal aspects of drainage, basics of drainable soils, drainage design software, safety, wetlands and conservation drainage concepts and techniques.

“These workshops are designed to give producers the information and tools they need, as well as some hands-on practice, to feel confident in developing a drainage design whether they plan to do it themselves or contract it out,” said Chris Hay, SDSU Extension Water Management Engineer. “We cover the entire design process from the basics of soils and drainage through spacing, layout, grade, and pipe sizing.”

Registration is $225, and preregistration is required. Due to seating limitations, onsite registration will not be available on the day of the event. To register for any of the workshops, visit

The workshop is part of a three-state extension outreach effort. Those who are unable to attend the Sioux Falls event on February 17-18 could register for the same workshop taking place in St. Cloud, MN on February 24-25 or Grand Forks, ND on March 10-11. The two-day workshops at all three locations begin at 8 a.m. day one and end at 5 p.m. on day two.
