USD men will play SDSU in Saturday’s Showdown Series

South Dakota State men’s basketball looks to extend its Frost Arena win streak to 27 and sweep rival South Dakota Saturday in the Showdown Series, presented by South Dakota Corn. SDSU took the first regular season matchup of the season in Vermillion 79-75.

The Jackrabbits won the last eight games versus the Coyotes inside Frost Arena and own a 74-22-1 record against USD in all games played in Brookings. The Coyotes opened last year’s game at Frost Arena (Jan. 19, 2015) with a 20-0 run, but got outscored 71-37 over the rest of the game.

“When these teams face off, it’s always special because of the fierce in-state rivalry,” said Reno Brueggeman, president of the Corn Utilization Council. “But this game holds even more significance now that the regular season is winding down and seeding for the conference tournament is up for grabs. And, of course, the winner also earns an important point in the Showdown Series. It should be exciting.”

The game tips at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, following SDSU women vs. Fort Wayne at 2 p.m.

SDSU currently leads USD 6-3 in the point-based rivalry series presented by South Dakota Corn. Each school can earn 24 points per year based on head-to-head competition and conference championships between SDSU and USD. There are a total of 17 men’s and women’s sports. Points are also awarded for student-athletes’ grade-point averages and philanthropic efforts.

The Showdown Series captivates fans of both major collegiate athletic departments, highlights agriculture and raises funds for Feeding South Dakota, the state’s largest hunger relief organization.

More than ever, both universities’ student bodies have stepped up to help the Showdown Series fight hunger. Already during the 2015-16 athletic season, students have raised $7,200 for Feeding South Dakota.

During halftime of Saturday’s game, SDSU cheer members will make their second attempt at breaking the Guinness world record for number of T-shirts put on in one minute. South Dakota Corn will donate $100 to Feeding South Dakota for each T-shirt worn. If the students beat the current record of 33 T-shirts, that donation will be bumped up to $10,000.

Fans can make an impact too. Dollars donated at concession stands around Frost Arena go to help feed hungry families in the state. If fans can’t make the game, they can make a donation at their local First Bank & Trust branch or go online to BankEasy.com or FeedingSouthDakota.org.

“This is a great opportunity for South Dakota State, along with the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council and the University of South Dakota to capitalize on the rivalry to promote Feeding South Dakota and make a difference throughout the entire state,” SDSU director of athletics Justin Sell said. “The Showdown Series puts a spotlight on these events, which we’re happy to use in a positive way for the benefit of needy South Dakotans.”
