Recently, a Bloomberg article showed that recent earnings reports indicate record profits for fertilizer companies. When input costs go up, a farmer’s profit margin shrinks. Fertilizer companies have certainly shown that they increase prices simply because they can do so.
South Dakota agriculture doesn’t stop at our borders. In fact, a large portion of the corn grown right here in our state is connected to international markets—whether it’s exported directly or used to produce ethanol, livestock, and products that are shipped worldwide.
May is celebrated as Beef Month in the U.S., where we are the world’s leading beef producer, supplying high-quality beef to consumers across the globe. Corn-fed beef is the most widely produced type of beef in the U.S., known and valued for its rich marbling and great flavor.
In late March, Farm Journal administered a National Corn Growers Association survey regarding fertilizer which illustrated that 36% of farmers still needed to purchase some of their phosphate fertilizer and similarly 40% of farmers still needed to buy nitrogen.
Farmers and ranchers are dedicated stewards of the land, protecting soil, water, and air for future generations. They invest in soil health through practices like cover crops and reduced tillage, efforts that benefit both the environment and their operations long-term.

Corn Comments: Countervailing Duty Imposed Upon Moroccan Phosphate Imports
A new review of the countervailing duty imposed upon Moroccan phosphate imports recently began to work its way through what is generally around a 9 month process from start to finish at the US Department of Commerce. Countervailing duties are intended to protect domestic industry from injury.
Improving soil health helps mitigate flood damage, reduces infrastructure costs, and builds resilience during drought. It improves water quality, strengthens wildlife habitat, and can even increase producer profitability.
As we pause celebrate Presidents Day, it's important to highlight the role agriculture plays in our country's history. Fourteen U.S. presidents were raised on or manage their own farm or ranch operation.
