Corn Comments: Texas A&M University Agricultural and Food Policy Center Releases U.S. Fertilizer Report

Welcome to Corn Comments, I’m DaNita Murray, Executive Director for South Dakota Corn. We are brought to you by the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council, a volunteer group of farmers who promote corn marketing in this state, the U.S., and around the globe.

Recently, the Texas A&M University Agricultural and Food Policy Center released a report confirming that the U.S. fertilizer industry is highly concentrated. The report also noted that both fertilizer price and volume information would result in more market transparency, with mandatory reporting option an option that Congress could consider.

The price surge in 2021 and 2022 tracked higher corn prices raising the question of market concentration and possible ways to improve transparency in this subsector.

Grower profitability is a foundational issue for the SD Corn Utilization Council. Stay tuned for more information on this and other topics.
