Farm Bill Update featuring SD Corn Executive Director, DaNita Murray

Welcome to Corn Comments, brought to you by the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council, a group of volunteer farmers working to market and promote corn here in this state, the US and around the globe. I’m DaNita Murray, Executive Director for South Dakota Corn.

In the 1996 farm bill, base acres were first fixed under Freedom to Farm and because of the 2002 bill, producers could designate the base on their farm using 1998-2001 acres including the addition of soybean and certain oilseeds for the first time with some parameters.

Corn production in South Dakota has changed since those historical planted acres were first used to calculate base. This has been another farm bill FYI. Thanks for listening!
