Corn Comments: October is Pork Month

October is pork month. Did you know? South Dakota ranks ninth in the nation for hog production? AND pigs LOVE corn! South Dakota’s swine heard will consume 35.5 million bushels of corn per year.

Pork is also great for our state’s economy! South Dakota’s pork production has a total impact of over $892 million and provides 7,900 jobs.

The United States is one of the world’s largest pork producers and exports 27 percent of pork products to consumers around the globe. Pork is loaded with protein and is an important source of nutrients like B vitamins and iron.
